There are more than 100 million displaced persons and 32 million refugees around the globe. Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Myanmar represent the top five countries of origin for refugees and 58% of the worldwide refugee population.

Established by the United Nations on June 20, 2001, World Refugee Day is celebrated around the world. The day is intended to not only bring awareness to the plight of refugees but also to celebrate their contributions to the new communities they call home.

The population growth experienced by Erie County as shown from the 2020 US Census is a direct result of the increase in immigrant, refugee, and asylee persons. Jewish Family Services of Western New York has a robust and growing porfolio of services to assist refugees and others throughout their resettlement journey.

Tiferet 2023 is intended to be the first of many years of recognition, celebration, and community knowledge building. A Hebrew word for beauty, balance, and diversity, Tiferet is like a colorful tapestry formed through the blending of ethnicities, cultures, and languages that make up our community.

For this inaugural event, JFS will welcome more than 300 people to its Barker Street location for an evening filled with international flavors, unique custom-made wares, and learning through music, dance, poetry, and specially-created education spaces for all ages.
